Man Arrested on Meth Charges Following Foot Chase

On 05/03/19 at around 11:00 P.M. a Deputy stopped a man on a bicycle carrying multiple backpacks near 12th & Market St in Metropolis. When the Deputy questioned the man, he fled on foot. A short foot chase ensued. The man was caught and detained. A search of the backpacks yielded syringes and Methamphetamine. The man was identified as 41 year old James Summers of Brookport. Summers was also on parole at the time of the arrest. Summers was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center and later transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections on a parole violation. The Massac County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Metropolis Police Department.

Three Men Arrested on Armed Robbery Charges

On April 27, 2019 Massac County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the area near the foot of the Brookport Bridge to investigate an Armed Robbery. Deputies met with three juvenile victims who alleged they were confronted by three men in the 3000 block of Strawberry Rd. One of the victims stated that he had been beaten with a pistol during the incident. It was also alleged that a pistol was discharged during the incident. Deputies began searching for three men identified by the victims. A Metropolis Police Officer located the alleged suspect vehicle near Huck's in Metropolis. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. Taken into custody were 18 year old Matthew Yates of Paducah, 21 year old Malik Miller from Metropolis and 19 year old Samuel Kralis of Metropolis. During the investigation, Deputies recovered two firearms believed to have been used during the alleged Armed Robbery. Yates, Miller and Kralis were held at the Massac County Detention Center pending formal charges by the Massac County States Attorney.

The Massac County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Metropolis Police Department, Illinois State Police and the Brookport Police Department.

Burglary Investigation Leads to Arrest of Metropolis Man

On 03/30/19 an Illinois State Trooper conducted a traffic stop in Metropolis near Hardee's. The State Trooper discovered items in the vehicle believed to be stolen. Deputies began investigating the items found by the State Trooper and tracked them back to an address in the 1000 block of Country Club Rd. Deputies went to the residence on Country Club Rd. and found evidence that indicated that the home had been burglarized. The homeowner was contacted and verified the items found during the traffic stop. Deputies charged 34 year old Zachariah Sigler, of Metropolis, with Residential Burglary.

The Metropolis Police Department assisted with the investigation.

Sheriff's Auction Set for April 18

The Massac County Sheriff's Office will be holding an auction April 18, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at the Massac County Sheriff's Office. Up for auction are two items.

There will be a minimum reserve bid on both items and both items are being auctioned as is no warranty.
 
Both items can be seen at the Massac County Sheriffs Office before the date of auction.

Metropolis Woman Charged During Forgery Investigation

On March 19, 2019 a report of forged checks was made to the Massac County Sheriff's Office. Deputies identified 34 year old Ashley Jenkins, of Metropolis, as the person they believed to have cashed a forged check. Jenkins was already wanted on a Massac County warrant on a Petition to Revoke Probation charge. Deputies gathered information on the whereabouts of Ashley Jenkins. Jenkins was believed to be a passenger in a vehicle in Metropolis. Metropolis Police located the vehicle and Ashley Jenkins inside the vehicle. Jenkins was taken into custody on the Massac County warrant. During a search, Metropolis Police Officers located drug related items along with a check book and a debit card belonging to the victim in the Forgery investigation. The report was turned over to the Massac County States Attorney for charges. Ashley Jenkins was charged with Possession of a Credit Card of Another as a result of the investigation.

Man Charged Following Investigation of Robbery Call

On March 16,2019 Deputies were called to the 8100 block of Unity School Rd for a report of possible robbery involving pistols being displayed. Deputies spoke with individuals who had been at the residence during the incident. During the investigation, Deputies learned that two individuals entered a residence. The individuals at the home got into an altercation with two people that entered the home. A physical altercation ensued in the yard of the residence. It was reported that a pistol was displayed and fired. The victims also reported that as the pistol was fired, it was determined the pistol was actually a pellet pistol. It was also reported that items were taken during during the altercation. Deputies were able to identify 20 year old Jacob Dunstan, of Golconda, as one of the individuals involved in the incident.

Metropolis Police later located Jacob Dunstan in Metropolis. Dunstan was arrested by the Metropolis Police Department on unrelated charges. Deputies continued to investigate the incident over the next several days. During the investigation, Deputies located a pellet pistol believed to be used during the incident. The photo below shows the pellet pistol recovered. The photo shows how realistic and dangerous a pellet pistol can appear.

Deputies turned the report over to the Massac County States Attorney's Office for charges. The Massac County States Attorney's Office issued charges of Aggravated Assault and Theft on Jacob Dunstan. Further arrests are possible.

Metropolis Woman Arrested on Meth Charges

On 03/15/19 at around 11:00 P.M. a Massac County Sheriff's Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of 18th Street and Neville Street in Metropolis. Metropolis Police arrived and assisted with the traffic stop. Metropolis Police K9 Officer Jacobo alerted on the vehicle to the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search of the vehicle, 1.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine was located along with a digital scale and several plastic baggies. The driver of the vehicle, 26 year old Katlyn Koon of Metropolis, was arrested and transported to the Massac County Detention Center. During the booking of Koon, a syringe was located. Koon was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deliver and Bringing Contraband into a Penal Institution.

Koon was arrested without incident.

Joppa Man Arrested on Multiple Warrants

On 03/17/19 Deputies with the Massac County Sheriff's Office received a tip that 20 year old Austin Lewis, of Joppa, was standing outside the Bunchman Apartments in Joppa. Deputies arrived and did not locate Lewis near the Bunchman Apartments. It was believed that Lewis had fled into an apartment. Deputies discovered that Lewis had fled out a window of an apartment during their search. A search of the area was made. Information was obtained that Lewis was hiding in a residence in the 200 block of Joppa North Avenue. Deputies searched the residence and located Lewis inside hiding. Lewis was taken into custody without incident. Austin Lewis was transported to the Massac County Detention Center and held on the following warrants:

Petition for Revocation of Probation (Theft)
Petition for revocation of Probation (Domestic Battery)
Possession of a Firearm without FOID Card

Hunting Cabin Burglarized

The Massac County Sheriff's Office recently took a report of a Burglary to a hunting cabin located in the 6300 block of Orchard Rd. The owner of the cabin recently came to the property and discovered several items missing from the cabin. Some of the items reported missing were tools, chairs, microwave, Emerson television, binoculars, deer stands and a one-man auger. A trail camera on the property located the above truck on the property on 01/07/19. Burglary Reported on North US HWY 45

The Massac County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Burglary at a residence in the 4400 block of US HWY 45 North. The homeowner had been in the process of renovating the residence. Sometime in the last two weeks, someone entered the residence and took several items from it. Extensive damage was done during the burglary. Wiring was ripped from the home along with plumbing. Some of the many items missing were hot water heater, light fixtures, air vents, wooden doors, toilets, vanity, bathroom sink, and a Jacuzzi tub. Below are photos provided by the homeowner.
