Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

On 10/19/18 a Deputy stopped a vehicle near 6th and Girard Street in Metropolis for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle, 34 year old Tyler Branaham of Louisa, Ky, had a suspended driver's license. Branaham was arrested for driving while license suspended. During the arrest, the Deputy located a hypodermic syringe loaded with methamphetamine. Branaham was charged with Driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Multiple Fires in Hillerman Being Investigated

On October 18, 2018 at 1:19 A.M. Deputies, along with Massac County Fire and Joppa Fire Departments, responded to a structure fire at 11 Hillerman Circle and a barn fire at 756 Grand Chain Rd. The two addresses are located adjacent to each other. Both fires caused excessive damage to both structures. A house located at 756 Grand Chain Rd., near the burned barn, was not damaged in the fire.

At 4:20 A.M. Deputies and firefighters were dispatched back to 756 Grand Chain Rd. The house located there was on fire. The house received significant damage in that fire.

The Illinois State Fire Marshall's Office was contacted and requested for assistance with the investigation of the fires. 

The fires are being investigated as suspicious in nature at this time.

The Massac County Sheriff's Office and Massac County Fire were assisted by the Joppa Fire Department.

On 09/21/18 Deputies went to the 1300 block of Filmore St. in Metropolis to serve an arrest warrant on 57 year old James S. Joiner of Metropolis. Deputies located Joiner at the address and placed him under arrest on the warrant for Failure to Appear in Court on an original charge of Battery. Joiner was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

On 09/24/18 a Deputy was at the Massac County Courthouse Annex where he observed 46 year old Suzette Henson, Metropolis. The Deputy was aware that Henson had an outstanding warrant out of Massac County for 2 Counts of Theft. Henson was placed under arrest and lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

On 09/25/18 a Deputy was at the Citgo gas station on 5th St. in Metropolis. The Deputy became aware that 33 year old Raymond Derry was hiding from him in the restroom inside the gas station. When Derry exited the restroom, he was placed under arrest for a warrant out of Massac County for Failure to Comply with a Court Order. Derry was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

On 09/25/18 Deputies went to a residence in the 600 block of Mt. Mission Rd. to served an arrest warrant on 30 year old Desiree Morrison of Metropolis. A warrant was issued for Morrison for Failure to Appear in Court on an original charge of Arson. Morrison attempted to hide from Deputies but was located and placed under arrest. Morrison as lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

Interstate Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Money Arrest

On 09/02/18 a Deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 24. The Deputy observed the driver and passenger attempting to switch seats as he made the traffic stop. The driver, 20 year old Kierstyn McClendon of Sterling, IL, was arrested for No Driver's License and Obstructing a Peace Officer. The passenger in the vehicle, 18 year old Jordan Colmark of Sterling, IL, was arrested for Obstructing a Peace Officer. During an inventory of the vehicle's contents, Deputies located over 30 grams of suspected cannabis, 40 hits of suspected Hallucinogenics and over $17,000 in cash beleived to be proceeds from illegal drug sales. Both McClendon and Colmark were lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Man Arrested on Warrant, Domestic Battery and Meth Charges

On 08/24/18 Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Mt. Mission Rd. for a Domestic Battery complaint. When a Deputy arrived, he discovered 51 year old Richard Hurt, of Metropolis, standing over top of a female who was laying underneath him. The Deputy was aware that Hurt had an outstanding warrant out of Massac County for Failure to Appear in court on an original Aggravated Domestic Battery charge. Hurt was arrested on the warrant. While in the process of arresting Hurt, the Deputy located suspected methamphetamine on Hurt. Witnesses stated that they saw Hurt drag the female victim by the hair. Hurt was taken to the Massac County Detention Center and charged with Domestic Battery and Possession of Methamphetamine as well as the outstanding Massac County warrant.

Sex Offender Arrested in Brookport for Failure to Comply

On 08/23/18 Deputies with the Massac County Sheriff's Office and the Brookport Police Department went to an address in the 900 block of Crockett St. in Brookport. Deputies were searching for 37 year old Ned Conner of Paducah. Conner is a convicted sex offender out of McCracken County. A warrant was issued out of McCracken County when Paducah Police discovered he was not living at the address he had registered at. Conner was located on Crockett St. and arrested. Conner was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center pending extradition to McCracken County.

Brookport Man Arrested on Meth Offense

On 08/17/18 a Deputy stopped a vehicle in the 2100 block of East 5th St. in Metropolis. The driver of the vehicle, 30 year old Kevin Partain of Brookport, was arrested for Driving on a Suspended License. During a search of the vehicle, the Deputy discovered a plastic baggie containing 7 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine. Partain was charged with Driving on a Suspended License and Possession of Methamphetamine. He was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center. The Brookport Police Department and the Metropolis Police K9 Unit assisted in the arrest.

3 Women Arrested on Drug Charges Following Trespass Call

On 08/12/2018 Deputies were dispatched to the area of Unity School Rd. and Dornbush Rd. to investigate individuals who were allegedly seen going in and out of an abandoned building. A Deputy located the vehicle near Interstate 24 and Highway 45 and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. A search was conducted on the 3 female passengers and the vehicle. Deputies located spoons, burnt glass pipes, a digital scale and an amount of prescription medication. Deputies arrested 49 year old Rita Mitchell, 41 year old Bridgette Murphy and 42 year old Jeriann Youman, all of Metropolis.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Gun Arrest

On 07/26/18 at around 3:30 A.M. a Deputy stopped a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 24. The driver of the vehicle, 33 year old Damario D. Rankin of Riverdale Georgia, had a revoked driver's license. A search of the vehicle uncovered a bag of cannabis and a substantial amount of suspected Ecstasy pills. Also uncovered during the search was a loaded .45 caliber handgun. The handgun was reported stolen out of Dekalb County, Georgia. Also found was over $4,000 in cash. A passenger in the vehicle, 30 year old Stephen M. Woods of Roswell, Georgia, was also arrested. Both were lodged at the Massac County Detention Center. Both were charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of Cannabis over 30 grams, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver along with other traffic offenses.

Naked, Intoxicated Woman Arrested in Joppa

On 07/19/18 a Deputy was called to the Lewis St. area in Joppa for a complaint of a naked woman in the street. The Deputy learned that a woman, wearing only thong underwear, approached a group of minors. The woman allegedly asked the minors if they wanted alcohol. The Deputy located the woman in the area. The woman was identified as 44 year old Buffy Lee of Tunnel Hill in Johnson County. While speaking with the Deputy, Lee displayed signs of intoxication due to alcohol and a controlled substance. Lee was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, Public Indecency and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Lee was lodged at the Massac County Detention Center where she was able to post bond.
